Pomade

This is where it all started for Pomade-Online. We could literally spend hours talking with you about our favorite hair styling product. After our first encounter with a Pomade, our entire perspective on hair styling changed forever. For us, Pomade is not just a product — its use has a long history, with quality, craftsmanship, and expertise being recurring characteristics of a good Pomade. It’s great that you found us, and welcome to the club!

The Pomade brands we offer in this category have been carefully selected and carry our personal approval. We have literally tested everything and can confidently call ourselves experts in this field.

But what exactly is Pomade? How did it originate, and what types are there? We hope this page will help guide you a little in the world of Pomade. If you have any further questions after reading, or if you want personal advice from one of our Pomade experts, please don’t hesitate to call or email us. We’re ready to share our passion with you!

What is Pomade?
Pomade is today one of the most commonly used hair styling products for men. The word Pomade comes from the French word pommade, meaning ointment or balm. Traditionally, Pomade was made from various greasy ingredients and was naturally difficult to wash out. A traditional Pomade is usually oil-based. Examples include Black & White Original, famously used by Elvis Presley, or Sweet Georgia Brown Pomade — all outstanding products with rich histories.

Nowadays, there are hundreds of types of Pomades available, with water-based Pomades being especially popular. Thanks to brands like Layrite, Reuzel, and Suavecito, Pomade has seen a huge rise in popularity, becoming a well-known and healthier alternative to the classic yellow pot gels (you know the ones).

What types of Pomades are there?
There are countless products on the market calling themselves Pomades, with dozens of different names for similar or equivalent products. At Pomade-Online, we keep it simple. Choosing the right product is hard enough, so we focus on two main types: oil-based Pomades and water-based Pomades. Your choice between these should depend on your hairstyle and hair type.

Why choose an oil-based Pomade?
We understand — it might not sound very appealing. Many customers hesitate because oil-based Pomades aren’t easy to wash out daily. However, there are many benefits to using oil-based Pomades. We generally recommend this type if you wear a traditional hairstyle and want a product with a nice shine that doesn’t harden and can be restyled all day long. But how do you wash it out? Simply put, you don’t — at least not every day. Using an oil-based Pomade requires some getting used to. Our method is to apply it for up to four consecutive days. On the fifth day, we recommend switching to a water-based Pomade or a product like Lockharts Groom Cream, which can be easily washed out with shampoo. On the days you use oil-based Pomade, we suggest using a hair tonic. Our personal favorites are Ed. Pinaud Clubman Eau de Portugal or the blue Reuzel Hair Tonic. Hair tonics keep the scalp clean and refresh the Pomade buildup for easy restyling.

The crowd favorite: Water-based Pomade
In our opinion, not a "real" Pomade in the traditional sense. With the huge rise of barbershops and Pomade usage, the demand grew for a product that works like traditional Pomade but washes out like gel. Donnie Hawley, barber and founder of Layrite Deluxe, recognized this early on, and Layrite was born. Layrite was one of the first brands to offer a full range of water-based Pomades combining the benefits of traditional Pomades with the convenience of easy-to-wash gels — without making hair “helmet hard” or causing “flaking.” Soon after, Suavecito launched its impressive water-based Pomade collection. Today, nearly every brand offers a water-based Pomade, including Dutch pride Reuzel, created by the owners of Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier in Rotterdam.

Which Pomade is right for me?
This depends on the factors mentioned above. We can confidently say that we are the best team to advise you. Besides our webshop and showroom, we have a barbershop in the center of Oud-Beijerland, where our barbers and Pomade enthusiasts have years of experience styling all types of hair with our full product range. If you have questions or want personalized advice, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re happy to guide you in finding the perfect Pomade.
