The year was 1999. To most, it seemed like the golden era of traditional barbering was fading fast. But Donnie Hawley, the passionate founder of Layrite, was still in the shop every day, perfecting his clients’ hairstyles with care and precision. There was just one problem: many of his clients used oil-based products that were nearly impossible to wash out.
Refusing to compromise on style or performance, Donnie set out to create something better—something that fit his vision of modern barbering. The result was a water-based pomade that offered the strong hold of wax but rinsed out as easily as a gel. That innovation gave rise to Layrite’s now-iconic slogan: “Holds like wax, washes out like gel.”
